Day 1: sign in and find a property
Ten minutes from your first sign-in to a property on the map, with its boundary, its title and its owners in front of you.

In this guide
- Sign in — for the first time
- What you are looking at — the map, the search box, the toolbar
- Search an address — and pick the property
- Read what the map found — the parcel and its details
- Open the title — owners, and the link to the official record
- Get around the map — zoom, pan, and the coordinates under the pointer
- Where to get help
- Quick answers
This is the whole of day one. Whether you are a surveyor, a planner, a property professional or working for a council, this is where everyone starts. Day 2 covers the tools on the toolbar, and Day 3 getting your work out of GRIP. Settings and defaults have their own guide, Make GRIP yours, for once you have a result on the screen.
1 Sign in
Go to app.grip.co.nz. Your login is your email address and the password from your welcome email.

- Type your email address and password, and click Sign in.
- The first time, you are asked to set a new password in place of the temporary one.
- The first time, you are also asked to read and accept the terms and conditions.
- The map loads.
2 What you are looking at

| Key | What it does | |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Search | Type an address, a legal description, a title number and more. The list beside it says what kind of thing you are searching for. |
| 2 | The toolbar | Every tool, top to bottom: layers, the aerial photo, selecting, plan search, the label control, filters, tools, measuring, mark up, print, and your location. Day 2 walks them. |
| 3 | Coordinates | Where the pointer is on the ground, in the datum chosen beside it. |
| 4 | Menu | Home, your account, feedback, help, and Log out — or Log out everywhere, to sign out on every device at once. |
| 5 | Settings | The cog at the bottom right: where the map opens, which layers are on, and your details for printing. See Make GRIP yours. |
Your first sign-in opens on the whole of New Zealand. Property boundaries from LINZ are on from the start and appear as you zoom in, down to a single lot. Later you can choose where the map opens and which layers are on — see Make GRIP yours.
3 Search an address
The search box is at the top right. The list beside it is set to Address when you first open GRIP.

This guide searches 1 Molesworth Street in Wellington, a public place and the example the search box itself suggests. Use any address you like.
- Click in the search box (1) and start typing the address. After four letters, suggestions appear underneath.
- Click the address you want in the list (2).
- The map goes to the property and selects it, and its details open in the panel on the right.

4 Read what the map found

| Key | What it does | |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | The property | Selected and outlined in yellow. The map moves to fit it. |
| 2 | Parcel Information | The appellation (the legal description), the address, the surveyed area, the parcel’s status and intent, its titles, and its owners. |
| 3 | The title | Click the title number to open the title. Grip beside it opens a free preview in a new tab; LINZ opens the official record at Landonline, where the current title can be bought. |
5 Open the title
Click the title number in the Parcel Information panel.

| Key | What it does | |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Title Reference | The title number, its type, land district and issue date, with the Grip preview and LINZ links again. |
| 2 | Registered owners | Who holds the estate, and in what shares. |
| 3 | Current and Historic Interests | The memorials on the title — easements, mortgages, transfers. Click any instrument to see what it affects. |
Back at the top of the panel returns to the parcel. You can keep clicking through: a parcel to its title, a title to its instruments, an instrument to the other titles it touches.
6 Get around the map
- Zoom with the mouse wheel, or the + and − buttons at the top left. Hold Shift and drag a box to zoom straight to it.
- Pan by dragging the map.
- Coordinates of the pointer show at the bottom right, in the datum chosen beside them — NZTM by default. Change the datum and the coordinates change with it, and GRIP remembers your choice.

7 Where to get help

- Help in the menu opens this help centre.
- Feedback sends a question or a suggestion to the GRIP team.
- Or email support@grip.co.nz.
8 Quick answers
Nothing appears when I type an address.
Suggestions start after four characters. Check the list beside the box says Address — if it says Title or Appellation, GRIP is looking for something else.
The address I know is not in the list.
Try the street on its own and pick from the full results. Addresses come from LINZ, and a new subdivision can take a while to arrive.
I clicked the map and a panel opened I did not want.
Clicking the map selects what is under the pointer. Close the panel with the arrow at its top right, or click Back to return to the previous selection.
The owners shown are out of date.
GRIP updates from LINZ at most weekly. Follow the LINZ link for the official record as it stands today.
Can I do this on my phone?
Yes. GRIP works in the phone’s browser; the search is behind the magnifying glass at the top right. See Devices and the field.
Next is Day 2, the tools on the toolbar. To set where the map opens and what it shows first, see Make GRIP yours.
