1  What GRIP runs on

  • Any modern browser — Chrome (recommended), Edge, Firefox or Safari, kept up to date.
  • Any device — Windows, Mac or Linux computers, iPads and Android tablets, iPhones and Android phones.
  • An internet connection. GRIP does not work offline.
  • There is nothing to install. Sign in at app.grip.co.nz.
Note  Print large sheets on a computer. A phone’s browser can only draw so big a picture, and an A2 or A1 sheet may be more than it can manage: GRIP then says the paper size is too large for this browser. A smaller paper size, or a computer, will print it.

2  GRIP on a phone

It is the same map and the same account. The toolbar is down the right-hand side as on a desk, and the menu is at the top left. Pinch to zoom, drag to pan, tap to select.

3  Searching on a phone

Tap the magnifying glass at the top right. The search panel opens with the search box and the search type; results list underneath.

4  Find yourself

Zoom to location, the target at the foot of the toolbar, moves the map to where your device says you are and shows how precisely it knows. It tightens as the GPS settles. The first time, the browser asks permission to use your location: allow it.

Tip  If it does nothing, location is switched off for the browser in the phone’s settings.

5  What is different on a phone

  • Mark up does not work on a phone. Colour parcels and build a legend on a computer.
  • Print works, with the print area above the panel. Closing the panel leaves the area on the map with Print panel and Done under it.
  • Quick measure works, with its toolbar along the foot of the map.
  • Settings are the same cog, and open full screen.

6  Before you leave the office

  • Download the plan images you will want: they are files, and open without a connection.
  • Export a KML of the site, to load into a GIS app that works offline on site.
  • Pin the job to the search box, so the site is one tap away.
  • Add GRIP to your home screen — see Make GRIP yours.

7  Quick answers

The map will not load on site.

GRIP needs a connection. Check for reception; a weak signal loads the map slowly rather than not at all.

Zoom to location puts me in the wrong place.

Give it a moment outdoors: the accuracy circle shrinks as the GPS settles. Indoors it may never be good.

The sign-in page is blank on my phone.

Clear the browser’s data for GRIP or try a private tab, and check location permission is not blocking the page.

Can I use GRIP offline?

No. Take plan images and a KML with you instead.
