Where the map opens, which layers are on, the datum your coordinates are in, and what every printed sheet starts from.

None of this is needed to use GRIP. Set it when you notice yourself doing the same thing every time you open the map — panning to the same town, turning the same layers on, typing the same name into a print.

1  The Settings cog

Settings are the cog at the foot of the map, bottom right, away from the toolbar. It opens one box with two tabs, and each tab says at the top where what it holds is kept.

  • Map defaults are saved to your account. They follow you to any computer or browser you sign in on.
  • Print settings are kept in this browser on this computer. They do not follow you, and clearing your browsing data clears them.

2  Map defaults

The Map defaults tab, numbered to match the table below.

  Key What it does
1 Start location Your default opens the map at one place every time; Where you left it opens where you last were. With Your default chosen, Use what I am looking at makes the map as it stands the place it opens.
2 Start layers The defaults opens with the parcels on and everything else off. Last used opens with whatever layers you had on when you left.
3 Plan search defaults to The land district the plan search starts on. Set it to the district you work in most.
Tip  Working in one region for a while? Zoom to it, open Settings and click Use what I am looking at. Every sign-in opens there until you change it.

3  Print settings

The second tab holds your name, firm and logo for the title block of every printed sheet, and the paper, orientation, scale, label size, output and appearance a new sheet starts from.

  Key What it does
1 Your details Prepared by, Firm and a Logo (PNG, JPEG or SVG). They print in the title block of every sheet.
2 New sheet defaults What every new sheet starts from. Changing a sheet in the Print panel changes that sheet, never these. Reset defaults, beside Done at the foot of the box, puts them back to GRIP’s own.

The Printing guide covers each of these as they are used. From the Print panel, Change beside your name, firm or logo opens this tab directly.

4  The datum

The coordinates under the pointer show at the bottom right of the map, in the datum chosen beside them. Change it and the coordinates change with it. GRIP remembers your choice.

The datum you choose here is also the datum the panels use. Click a survey mark and its coordinates in the Mark Information panel are shown in this datum; change the datum and they change with it. Set it once to the system you work in and every coordinate GRIP shows you agrees.

The list holds New Zealand’s projected systems, all on NZGD2000:

  • NZTM 2000, where GRIP starts, for most work across the country.
  • The 28 meridional circuits, from Mt Eden 2000 in the north to Bluff 2000 in the south, for survey work in a district. Each is named for its circuit.
  • Chatham Island Circuit 2000 and Chatham Island TM 2000 for the Chatham Islands.
Good to know  Latitude and longitude are not offered: every choice in the list gives coordinates in metres, east and north.

5  Things GRIP remembers on its own

Some things need no setting: GRIP keeps them from one visit to the next.

Click in the search box: the search type (1) is the one you last used, and a pinned search (2) stays at the top of your recent searches.

  What What GRIP keeps
1 The search type The list beside the search box — Address, Title, Appellation and the rest — opens on the one you used last.
2 Pinned searches Click in the search box and your recent searches drop down. Click the pin beside one to keep it at the top; click it again to let it go.
  Where you were Where the map was and which layers were on, when Start location is set to Where you left it and Start layers to Last used, in Map defaults (section 2).
  The datum The one chosen at the bottom right of the map (section 4).

6  GRIP on your phone’s home screen

GRIP runs in the phone’s browser; there is nothing to install. To open it from an icon on the home screen:

  1. Open app.grip.co.nz in your phone’s browser and sign in.
  2. On an iPhone or iPad, tap the Share button and choose Add to Home Screen. Safari has always done this; Chrome, Edge and Firefox do the same from their own Share button on iOS 16.4 or later. On Android, open the browser menu and choose Add to Home screen or Install app.
  3. Name it GRIP and add it. The icon opens the map like an app.

7  Quick answers

The map opens somewhere I do not want.

Settings › Map defaults › Start location. Choose Your default and click Use what I am looking at with the map where you want it, or choose Where you left it.

My layers reset every time I open GRIP.

Settings › Map defaults › Start layers › Last used.

My name and logo have gone from my prints.

Print settings live in the browser they were set in. On another computer or browser, or after clearing browsing data, set them again under the cog.

The coordinates are in the wrong system.

Change the datum at the bottom right of the map. It sets the coordinates under the pointer and the coordinates shown for marks in the panels, and the choice is remembered.

Where did the Settings tab in Tools go?

It became the cog at the foot of the map. Tools still has a note pointing there.
