Day 3: mark up, print and export
Turn map information into something you can hand to someone: a coloured plan, a printed sheet with your title block, or a file for CAD or GIS software.

In this guide
- Colour parcels — Mark up
- Put it on a sheet — Print
- Take the data with you — Export
- Your firm’s own points — Company data
- Where to next
Days 1 and 2 were about finding and reading. Today is about producing. Each section is the shortest route to a result; the full guide is linked from each.
1 Colour parcels
Mark up is the brush
on the toolbar. Pick a colour, click Fill
, and click parcels — or hold and sweep across a row of them. Each colour you use gets a row in a legend, ready to be named.

- Click the brush
. - Choose a colour, click Fill
, and click the parcels. - Open Legend and give each colour a name and the legend a heading.
- Minimise Mark up. The markup stays on the map.
Full guide: Map - mark up parcels and build a legend.
2 Put it on a sheet
Print is the printer
. The print area appears on the map with the panel: drag it over the job, set the paper and scale, type a title, and click Create PDF. Your markup’s colours and legend go on the sheet as they are on the map.

Your name, firm and logo are set once, under the Settings cog
at the bottom right of the map: see Make GRIP yours. Full guide: Map - Printing.
3 Take the data with you
The spanner
opens Tools, where three tabs take data out of GRIP.

- CSV — survey marks with coordinates and heights.
- DXF — a layered CAD drawing of what the map has on.
- KML — parcels and marks to load into GIS software, such as QGIS or ArcGIS.
Full guide: Map - Export.
4 Your firm’s own points
Company data puts your firm’s own information on the map — job numbers, client references, links to project folders — as points only your firm can see. Once they are there, every past job near the one you are working on is a click away, and searchable from the search box.
- An account administrator sets up the fields once: Company Data - Setup & Configuration.
- Anyone in the firm adds and edits points: Company Data - creating, adding, and searching for company data.
5 Where to next
- Make GRIP yours — where the map opens, which layers are on, your datum, your print details.
- Devices and the field — GRIP on a phone or tablet.
- Boundary accuracy in New Zealand and Extracting Contours from Map Data — what the boundaries and contours can and cannot tell you.
